David Hewitson is a theatre director and producer based in Glasgow. He is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Theatre 118, a new fringe venue dedicated to grassroots, DIY and emerging theatre makers.
Since opening in 2025, Theatre 118 has grown rapidly and has built a steady core audience. Under David’s leadership, the venue has mounted fourteen original in-house productions—including a critically acclaimed season of new one-act plays, Play of the Week—and hosted six touring productions. A key focus has been artist development: this year alone, the venue has supported over 400 artists with access to in-kind rehearsal space, wellbeing workshops, networking opportunities and one-on-one producing and technical support.
As a director, David specialises in making shows which are riotous, musical, and full of colour. In 2025, he directed three plays for Short Attention Span Theatre, as well as R&Ds with artists including Louis Utieyin and Biff Smith (the current World Poetry Slam Champion). Previously, he worked as Assistant Director on Sleeping Warrior Theatre’s 2024 tour of To Save The Sea.
Through his freelance producing practice, David works to remedy the structural problems that make it particularly hard for disabled and low-income people to participate in the arts in Scotland. Notable producing projects include a sold-out production of Our Generation in 2024 by Julie Calderwood at the Boardwalk, Glasgow, marking the 10-year anniversary of the Scottish Independence vote, and the Roughly Staged series of new writing scratch nights. He has worked closely with organisations including Sleeping Warrior Theatre, Summerhall, Cumbernauld Theatre, the Ayr Gaiety, Fox and Hound Theatre, A Note to Remember and the Comedy Unit.
David is a trustee of Soundplay Projects SCIO and a facilitator at Stage2Page.
